Pollinating Insects
Bees : They love flowers, especially in various colors such as white, blue, yellow and purple. They also appreciate dill, echinacea, lemon balm, mint, salvia and sunflower.
You may also consider placing a bee hotel (box with holes) in your yard near your garden for the bees to stay in for the long term. Bees can also benefit from a place to drink, so putting a shallow water dish near your garden with maybe some rocks or twigs for bee landing areas can help. Avoid using pesticides, as they are toxic to everyone.
Hummingbirds : Hummingbirds are known to like the color red, but they also like purple, orange and pink flowers. Like bees, hummingbirds also love salvia.
You can also fill a hummingbird feeder with sugar water that is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Make sure you don't put any dye in your hummingbirds' water, as it can harm them. Nectar in the wild is clear, so the food you give them should also be clear. Hang it up somewhere where you can easily see and admire these little wonders as they stop for a drink.
Butterflies : You can make them happy by planting a wide variety of flowers. Try planting yarrow, butterfly weed, salvia and sunflower. Other good options are echinacea and coneflower.
Besides planting a variety of flowers in your garden, you can also prepare a place for butterflies to quench their thirst, and where they can get the essential minerals they need. To do this, fill a shallow dish or pot with sand then saturate the sand with water. You can even put some rocks in there where the butterflies can land. Place the oasis in a sunny, sheltered location so the butterflies can sunbathe in the morning sun before heading out again. Also, be sure to place it somewhere where you can observe these amazing creatures!
