The Autumn Vegetable Garden
The best sorts to plant in August are Swiss chard, beetroot, carrot, kale, bok choi, kohlrabi, cilantro, spinach, lettuce, mustard, turnip, l green onion, parsley and radish.
The fall vegetable garden depends on many factors like the weather and the location of your garden, but these little tips should help you get the most out of it.
Amend your soil : Pulling up the plants in our garden always removes some soil, but the plants themselves have absorbed the nutrients. Add an inch or two of fresh compost before planting, and your potions if it's living soil.
Check maturity time : Count back from your region's frost date to see if your plants will have a chance to grow before temperatures really start to drop, and add another ten days to be sure .
Plan Ahead : Start your plants under grow lights (the ones that don't need direct seeding), so they have an even further head start in the garden. This is a good idea for lettuces, as many are slow to sprout in warm, dry soil.
Take care : Soil conditions in summer (heat and drought) can make it difficult for seeds to germinate. Try to keep the soil moisture constant where the seeds are planted, by misting lightly with your hose or a watering can.
Happy gardening and happy fall harvest!
