Joual Vert

Despite Quebec's sometimes unpredictable climate, it is entirely possible to grow hot peppers successfully in your garden. These plants need specific conditions to thrive, but with a little attention and care, you can harvest an abundance of these spicy delights 🌶

Peppers need a long growing season, so it is best to start seeds indoors about 8 to 10 weeks before the expected last frost. In Quebec, this generally means starting seeds in February or March.

Sow pepper seeds 0.5 cm deep in a good-quality seed-starting mix. Keep the soil moist and maintain a temperature of about 24–27°C to encourage germination.

Once the risk of frost has passed, generally in May or June, and the seedlings have at least two true leaves, you can transplant them outdoors. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.

Space plants about 45 to 60 cm apart to provide good air circulation.

Peppers like water, but avoid overwatering. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Peppers benefit from an organic fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote foliage at the expense of fruit.

Watch for diseases and pests. Aphids and nematodes can cause problems. Use organic pest-management methods and avoid chemical pesticides.

Harvest peppers once they have reached their full size and colour. You can harvest them earlier if you prefer a milder flavour.
