Joual Vert

Zucchini, also known as summer squash, is a popular summer vegetable in Quebec because it grows quickly and is so versatile in the kitchen. It is easy to grow and can thrive in your garden with a little planning and care, as long as it receives plenty of ☀️

Zucchini is sensitive to frost, so it is important to wait until the risk of frost has passed before planting. In Quebec, this is generally between mid-May and mid-June. For greater control over growth, you can start seeds indoors about 4 weeks before planting outdoors.

It prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0 to 7.0). Improve the soil by incorporating compost to increase fertility and improve its structure.

Space plants about 60 to 90 cm (2 to 3 feet) apart. This spacing provides good air circulation and helps prevent the spread of disease.

Zucchini needs full sun to thrive. Make sure the plants receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

It also needs regular watering to keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering, as it can encourage disease. Water the plants directly at soil level to avoid wetting the leaves, which could lead to disease.

Fertilize zucchini plants with a balanced organic fertilizer about one month after planting. You can also add compost for ongoing organic fertilization.

Check the plants regularly for signs of insects or disease and act quickly to address any problems. Prune damaged or diseased leaves to improve air circulation and reduce the spread of disease.

Zucchini is generally ready to harvest when it reaches about 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) long. For the best flavour, harvest it while it is young and tender. Harvest frequently to encourage continued fruit production.
