Joual Vert

Spaghetti squash is a versatile, flavourful vegetable that makes a welcome addition to many gardens, and it is relatively easy to grow. Follow these steps to grow it successfully 🍝

Spaghetti squash needs warmth to grow well. In most parts of Quebec, spaghetti squash seedlings can be planted outdoors after the last frost, generally between mid-May and mid-June. You can also start seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the planned outdoor planting date.

Prepare the soil by incorporating compost to improve fertility and drainage. Spaghetti squash prefers rich, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0 to 7.0).

Plant them about 90 cm (3 feet) apart, in rows spaced 1.5 to 2 metres (5 to 6 feet) apart. This spacing provides good air circulation and helps prevent the spread of disease.

They need full sun to thrive. Make sure the plants receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

They also need regular watering to keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering, as it can encourage disease. Water the plants directly at soil level to avoid wetting the leaves, which could lead to disease.

Fertilize spaghetti squash plants with a balanced organic fertilizer about one month after planting. You can also add compost for ongoing organic fertilization.

Because they are pollinated by bees and other pollinating insects, make sure there are flowers nearby to attract pollinators and support fruit production.

Spaghetti squash is generally ready to harvest 90 to 100 days after planting. The fruit is ripe when it is cream-coloured or pale yellow and has hard skin that resists pressure from a finger.

You can store it in a cool, dry place at a temperature between 13 and 16°C (55 to 60°F) and a humidity level of 50 to 70% for at least 3 months!
