Turnips are hardy vegetables that grow well in Quebec's climate. They are nutritious, versatile in the kitchen, and relatively easy to grow as long as they have enough water
Turnips tolerate cold and can be sown as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, generally in April or May. For a fall harvest, sow the seeds in mid-summer.
Sow them directly in the garden at a depth of about 1 cm, spacing plants about 15 cm apart. Rows should be spaced about 30 cm apart.
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Turnips grow best when they receive a consistent water supply.
If your soil is rich in organic matter, additional fertilizer may not be necessary. If your soil is poor, a balanced organic fertilizer can be added at planting.
Weed regularly to prevent competition for nutrients. Turnips can be susceptible to certain diseases and pests, so watch for signs of problems.
Turnips are generally ready to harvest 6 to 8 weeks after sowing, when the roots have reached about 5 cm in diameter. Turnip greens are also edible and can be harvested at any time.
