Here are a few tips for growing fresh, flavourful spring garlic right in your own garden 🧄

Garlic prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0). In early spring, add compost and work the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm.

In spring, as soon as the ground has thawed enough and nighttime temperatures remain above −4°C, plant the cloves (the individual sections of a garlic bulb) about 5 cm deep with the pointed end facing up, spacing them approximately 10–15 cm apart.

Water regularly in spring and summer, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Consistent watering is especially important during the active growing period, which generally runs from May to July.

Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced organic fertilizer to encourage healthy stem and bulb growth.

Keep the soil around the garlic plants free of weeds, which can compete with the garlic for nutrients and water.

Spring-planted garlic will be ready to harvest in 90–120 days, in late summer or early fall, when the upper half of the leaves begins to yellow and wilt. To harvest, carefully lift the bulbs from the soil with a garden fork or shovel.

Let the garlic bulbs cure for two to three weeks in a well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight. Once dry, trim the roots and stems, then store the bulbs in a cool, dry place.

Please note that garlic planted in spring may produce slightly smaller bulbs than garlic planted in fall, but it will still be flavourful and nutritious!
