Depending on the variety, cucumbers need 50 to 70 days of warm weather to mature. Start cucumber seeds indoors about 3 to 4 weeks before the expected last frost date in your region. In Quebec, this generally means starting them indoors between mid-April and early May.

Sow about 1.5 cm (1/2 inch) deep in pots filled with moist potting mix. Maintain a temperature of about 20–24°C (68–75°F) to encourage germination, which usually takes 7 to 10 days.

Before transplanting cucumber seedlings outdoors, it is important to harden them off. Gradually expose them to outdoor conditions over 1 to 2 weeks, increasing the duration and intensity of sunlight each day.

Plant young cucumber plants outdoors once the soil has warmed to at least 18°C (65°F) and the threat of frost has passed, generally in late May or early June in Quebec. Space plants 30 to 90 cm (12 to 36 inches) apart, depending on the variety. Cucumbers like full sun and rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0 to 6.8).

Cucumbers tend to trail along the ground, which can lead to disease and rot. Use trellises, cages, or stakes to support them and promote better air circulation and sun exposure.

They need regular, deep watering, especially during hot, dry periods. It is best to water at the base of the plants early in the morning so water does not remain on the leaves and encourage disease.

Fertilize them with a balanced organic fertilizer at planting, then again midway through the growing season. You can also add compost to improve soil fertility.

Harvest cucumbers when they are green, firm, and have reached the appropriate size for the variety you are growing.
