Joual Vert

Kohlrabi is a unique vegetable with a mild flavour and a pleasant crunch. It is often overlooked in vegetable gardens, but it is easy to grow and extremely versatile in the kitchen 🍽

Kohlrabi prefers cool weather, so it can be planted in spring or fall. For a spring harvest, start the seeds indoors four to six weeks before the last frost date, or sow them directly outdoors two to four weeks before the last frost. For a fall harvest, plant about 10–12 weeks before the expected first frost.

It prefers rich, well-drained soil. Add compost before planting to improve soil fertility.

Sow the seeds about 1 cm deep and 5 cm apart. Once the seedlings have grown, thin them to about 15 cm apart.

Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Prolonged dry conditions can make kohlrabi tough and fibrous.

Kohlrabi is a heavy feeder. Use a nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer to encourage vigorous growth.

Watch for pests such as aphids and cabbage white caterpillars. Use organic control methods if necessary.

Kohlrabi is ready to harvest when the swollen stem reaches about 5 cm in diameter. Do not let it grow too large, as it can become tough and fibrous.
