Sow asparagus seeds indoors about 12–14 weeks before you expect to transplant them into the garden (generally from mid-April to mid-May in Quebec). Sow them about 1 cm deep. Keep the soil moist and place the pots in a warm (20–25°C), well-lit location.

Asparagus seeds take about two to three weeks to germinate. Once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves, thin them to keep only the strongest plants.

Asparagus prefers rich, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Prepare the planting bed by loosening the soil and adding compost.

Once the seedlings are about 10 cm tall and all risk of frost has passed, transplant them into the garden. Dig trenches about 15 cm deep and 30 cm wide. Space the plants 45 cm apart in the trench and lightly cover the roots with soil. Gradually add more soil to fill the trench as the plants grow.

Asparagus needs regular watering and consistently moist—but not waterlogged—soil. Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to conserve soil moisture and reduce weed growth.

Fertilize the asparagus each spring with a balanced organic fertilizer to encourage vigorous growth.

In fall, when the asparagus foliage turns yellow and dies back, resist the urge to cut it down. The dead foliage provides the plant with a natural layer of protection from the cold.

After the first frosts, once the ground is thoroughly cold, add a generous layer of organic mulch—such as compost, dead leaves, or straw—over the asparagus bed. The mulch should be about 10–15 cm deep. It helps protect the ground from freezing, retain moisture, and add nutrients to the soil as it decomposes.

In spring, after the risk of frost has passed, carefully remove the mulch so the soil can warm and new asparagus shoots can emerge. This is also when you should cut down and remove the previous year’s dead foliage. Do this before the new shoots begin to appear so you do not damage them.

When growing asparagus from seed, wait three to four years before harvesting so the plants have time to become well established. After that, harvest the asparagus in spring when the spears are about 18–20 cm tall. A well-maintained asparagus bed can produce harvests for 15–20 years or even longer!
