Composting 102: What?
What exactly is compostable? 🤔

Best Green Ingredients : Grass, recently fallen green leaves and flowers, fruits, vegetables, grains, coffee, tea bags, yard waste, manure from vegetarian animals, plants and egg and nut shells. 🌿 🎋 💩

Best Brown Ingredients : Listed compostable materials, dead leaves, flowers and twigs, napkins, paper towels, cardboard, brown bags and shredded black and white newspaper, shavings or sawdust wood, hamster/gerbil/rabbit cage bedding and paper coffee filters. 📦 📰 🪵

Materials not to be composted : Non-vegetarian manure (dog, cat, etc.), harmful weeds because they can spread even from a little plant material. Yard residues diseased, or treated with pesticides. Food scraps containing animal products because they may attract animals. Black walnut leaves or twigs because black walnut trees contain a natural chemical that is harmful to other plants. 🐄 🐖 🐓

Balancing the carbon to nitrogen ratio can be as simple or complicated as you want. The easiest approach is to stick to 1:1 to 1:3 (one part green to three parts brown) and make changes as needed. If you find that your compost is not warming up, you may need to add more green material, and if you find that your compost is starting to smell, you may need to add more browns. ⚖️
