Swiss chard seeds can be sown directly in the ground about two to four weeks before the expected last frost. In Quebec, that generally means planting from April onward.

Swiss chard prefers rich, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Add compost to the soil before planting.

Sow the seeds about 1 cm deep and space them 7–10 cm apart. Rows should be about 45 cm apart. Once the seedlings have a few true leaves, thin them if necessary to leave about 25 cm between plants.

Swiss chard needs regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist. Soil that is too dry can cause uneven growth and less flavourful leaves.

Apply a layer of organic mulch around the Swiss chard plants to help retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weed growth.

Apply a balanced organic fertilizer after planting to encourage vigorous growth. You can also use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every four to six weeks during the growing season.

Harvesting can begin as soon as the leaves are large enough, generally when they reach 20–25 cm in length. Cut the outer leaves about 2.5 cm above the soil so that the inner leaves can continue to grow. Swiss chard can be harvested throughout the season until the first fall frosts!
