Joual Vert

Spinach is a nutritious, versatile leafy vegetable that is easy to grow in Quebec. It can thrive when planted at the right time and given proper care 🍃

Spinach is a cold-hardy plant that grows best in cool temperatures. You can sow it directly outdoors about four to six weeks before the expected last frost, generally from late April to early May. For a fall harvest, sow the seeds in late August or early September.

It prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Before sowing, add compost or well-rotted manure to improve the soil’s fertility and structure.

Sow the seeds about 1 cm (1/2 inch) deep and 5 cm (2 inches) apart. Once the seedlings are well established, thin them to about 15 cm (6 inches) apart. This spacing promotes good air circulation and helps minimize disease problems.

Spinach grows well in full sun but also tolerates partial shade. Make sure the plants receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Organic mulch can help retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer about one month after germination. You can also add compost for continuous organic feeding.

Inspect the plants for signs of pests or disease and act quickly to address any problems. Pests such as aphids can be removed by crushing them with your fingers or spraying them off with a stream of water. Diseases such as downy mildew can be prevented by ensuring good air circulation and keeping the leaves dry when watering.

Spinach is generally ready to harvest when the leaves are about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) long. You can harvest individual leaves by cutting the outer leaves and leaving the centre leaves to continue growing, or harvest the whole plant by cutting the leaves near the base. Spinach tends to grow quickly, so harvest it regularly to prevent the leaves from becoming too large and tough.
