Joual Vert

If you want to enjoy delicious fresh peas straight from your garden, you are in luck! Thanks to the region’s cool spring weather, peas are an ideal crop for starting the gardening season. These small green vegetables are not only tasty but also an excellent source of protein, fibre, and vitamins 😋

Peas are generally planted in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. In Quebec, this usually means April or early May, depending on the weather.

They prefer well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Add compost before planting to increase the soil’s organic-matter content.

Sow them directly in the soil about 2 cm deep. Space bush-pea seeds about 5 cm apart and climbing-pea seeds up to 10 cm apart.

Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Peas need consistent moisture to germinate and grow properly.

Climbing peas need a trellis or another type of support. Install it at planting time to avoid disturbing the roots later.

Peas fix their own nitrogen, so fertilizer is generally unnecessary. A balanced organic fertilizer can be used if needed.

Watch for pests such as aphids and flea beetles. Organic control methods can be used to manage them.

Pea harvesting generally begins about 60–70 days after planting. The peas are ready when the pods are plump and green.
