Joual Vert

Whether you are an experienced gardener or a beginner, you can successfully grow aromatic, medicinal, or culinary herbs in your garden or on your balcony. Here is a simple guide to help you get started 🌱
Most herbs prefer a sunny location with 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. Choose a well-drained spot to prevent the roots from rotting because of excess water.

Herbs grow best in light, fertile, well-drained soil. Add compost or peat moss to improve the soil structure and its water-holding capacity.

In Quebec, it is best to start herbs indoors in April, then transplant them outdoors in mid-May once the risk of frost has passed. Some herbs can also be sown directly after the last frost.

Water regularly, especially during dry periods. However, do not overwater, as herbs do not like waterlogged soil. Prune herbs to encourage bushy growth and remove dead or damaged stems.

Harvest herbs as you need them, taking care not to remove more than one-third of the plant at a time. Morning is the best time to pick herbs because their essential oils are at their peak.

You can keep fresh herbs in the refrigerator, wrapped in a damp paper towel inside a perforated plastic bag. You can also air-dry or freeze them for later use.

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy your own fresh, flavourful herbs throughout Quebec's growing season. Feel free to experiment with different varieties to add diversity and flavour to your cooking and your garden!
